The pace bowler has taken 309 wickets in 71 Test matches with an impressive average.

The Australian chair of selectors Bailey has stated that pace spearhead Cummins will have a crucial role in this winter's historic rivalry.

Speculation had been growing that Cummins might be unavailable due to a stress fracture in his back that was still troubling him.

Earlier indications from team management suggested no final decision had been made regarding Cummins' participation, with the extended contest scheduled to begin on 21 November in Western Australia.

He revealed that his recovery is on track and remained hopeful about his chances of being involved.

"We know that the clock is ticking and there are permutations around that, aside from his injury, but other factors as well," the selector added.

"The outlook is good. There's strong faith that he will feature a major part. Ideally from the opening match. If not, we'll adjust."

Injury History

He was sidelined the white-ball matches against both Asian and Trans-Tasman rivals recently after examinations confirmed a lower back issue.

Previous incidents include of spinal problems, with flare-ups in 2012-13, 2013-14 and 2015-16 causing him to miss multiple domestic campaigns in a limited period.

Cummins stated he would be bold in recovery efforts in his recovery plan to secure his spot for the Ashes.

He mentioned that it was unclear if Cummins had begun bowling as part of his recovery but conceded it was "becoming urgent" for him to be fit for the first Test.

Alternative Arrangements

If he's unavailable, former captain Steve Smith will take over the captaincy.

All-rounder Cameron Green was recently pulled out from the ODI lineup for their limited-overs matches against India as a precautionary measure because of an abdominal issue.

The selector characterized it as a "small issue and mentioned that Green will play in the Sheffield Shield, so will be "well-prepared to be ready to bowl."

"Extensive planning has gone into creating the schedule for him to take part for the first Test as an all-rounder," Bailey explained.

"Originally, he'd only feature in the first two ODIs in any case. His aggressive style the willow in shorter formats, if it causes any delay for a short period, the choice was made to take a cautious route."
