The former Brazilian leader has been taken into custody after authorities found he posed a serious risk of fleeing while under domestic detention.

The former head of state was sentenced of plotting a government overthrow in last fall and given more than 27 years in prison, but he was staying under confinement pending legal challenges.

High Court Judge Justice Moraes said the action to imprison the elderly politician was a preventative measure after fresh information came to light.

This encompassed seeking to disable his ankle monitor and a call for a supporters' gathering that could "allow for a potential flight.

Legal Document Reveals Flight Fears

In a filing authorising the detention, the magistrate said information from the facility tracking Bolsonaro's house arrest suggested the ex-president's "intention to break the electronic ankle bracelet to secure accomplishment in his getaway".

This, it said, would be "facilitated by the disorder caused by the protest called by his offspring.

His child, Flávio, who holds office as a congressional representative, called for a meeting of his followers near Bolsonaro's home to take place on the weekend.

His son wrote on digital networks on last Friday: "Are you going to fight for your country, or watch it all from your mobile device there on your sofa? I urge you to struggle with us."

He said the demonstration would be so followers could "pray for his physical condition and for the restoration of democratic rule in our country."

Embassy Asylum Concerns

Part of Justice Moraes's ruling was the chance of Bolsonaro's transfer to diplomatic missions near the home, considering that the investigations revealed a record of arranging to request asylum through a consular facility", a statement said.

The judicial paperwork emphasizes that the American diplomatic mission in the federal district, Brasilia, is positioned around 8 miles from Bolsonaro's home.

Worldwide Consequences

The former president's legal troubles have provoked anger from fellow right-wing populist US President Trump, prompting him to enact a half-rate duty on Brazilian product imports.

The former president is being held in a Federal Police station in Brasilia and will experience a imprisonment assessment on Sunday.

Recent Legal Requests

It was only on Friday that the former president's lawyers asked the Top Court to authorize him to complete his entire prison term under home confinement, with tracking devices.

They also petitioned that the former president be allowed to exit his dwelling for medical treatment, saying he needed regular treatment for lung conditions and other health problems.

Background on Conviction

Bolsonaro was found guilty of leading a conspiracy aimed at keeping him in power after he was defeated in the national vote to his political opponent, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.

Top judicial officials said that he had knowledge of a scheme which involved plans to murder Lula and his VP candidate, Geraldo Alckmin, and to detain and kill Justice Moraes - the High Court judge who has been overseeing his judicial proceedings.

The scheme was thwarted because it didn't receive the endorsement of the armed forces officials. His successor was inaugurated without issue on the first day of 2023.

But a following week, on 8 January, thousands of his backers invaded and destroyed government buildings in the national capital, the capital city.

The law enforcement intervened and around 1,500 people were arrested.

The justices found that the demonstrators had been incited by Bolsonaro whose strategy, they said, was for the national armed forces to intervene, bring back stability and reinstate his authority.

At the period, the legal team called the decades-long sentence "absurdly excessive.

He was also barred from seeking elected position until twenty-sixty - eight years later after the conclusion of his imprisonment.

The former president called the legal proceedings a political persecution and said it was aimed at blocking him competing in the 2026 national vote.
